Out Soccer Player Anton Hysen Signs with American Team
Openly gay Swedish soccer player Anton Hysen — who came out of the closet three years ago — has signed with the Myrtle Beach Mutiny of the National Premier Soccer League, in South Carolina.
“I am excited to be joining the Mutiny this season,” Hysén said in a release, according to Outsports.
“This is a great opportunity for me on a personal and professional level. I hope I can help take the team to the top of the NPSL,” he added.
‘Mutiny’ sporting director Pat Piscitelli said, “The Mutiny are very excited to have Anton joining us this year. A player of his caliber, with his international experience, will bring a positive change to the Mutiny. The Myrtle Beach area is in for a real treat with this team and will have the opportunity to see professional soccer played at a very high level.”
Hysen came out in 2011 making him the first high-profile Swedish footballer to announce that he is gay and as the second active professional football player to come out, after English footballer Justin Fashanu in 1990.
