Starz has finally found a new Spartacus — Liam McIntyre.

McIntyre will replace Andy Whitfield in the title role, unfortunately due to his battle with cancer.

The show’s producers were previously rumored to be reluctant to cast McIntyre due to his slight frame, but the actor was later reported to have undergone physical training to prepare for the role though the actor has admitted that he struggled to gain muscle.

“That director wanted me to look like Christian Bale in The Machinist,” he revealed. “The first thing I thought when I got this new role was ‘Thank Christ I get to eat food again’.”

McIntyre also described winning the role of Spartacus as “the greatest thing”.

“My brain nearly exploded at 4am when I found out,” he admitted. “I wanted it so much.

The second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand is expected to air on Starz in late 2011.

He’s 27.
